Well, our vigilance is necessary no matter where we are, not just because it's polite, but also because it effects the ecosystem. Here in Encinitas decaying dog poop is putting our quest for dog parks at risk. Storm-drain runoff is easily polluted by dog waste that hasn't been picked-up. Leaving it in the gutter or in the iceplant will guarantee that it will end up in the water at our beaches, contributing to high bacteria counts. Even when we're out in open land we shouldn't pretend that our dog's poop is "natural". Sure, one canine covering several acres would be natural, but the local coyotes are already taking that spot, so anything our dog leaves is too much. This is especially true in popular trail areas, where the density of dog visitors is like any urban area. Dog poop is like people poop - unfit for composting! The bacteria levels are sky-high, and it pollutes the environment wherever it is left to fester. Our quest for more off-leash recreation areas in Encinitas is being put in jeopardy by those dog owners who refuse to clean-up after their dogs when using parks and trails in the area. The city is getting complaints about this problem, and it is putting our plans at risk. They provide clean-up bags and trash containers in highly-used areas, and still people refuse to take responsibility for their dog's waste. There are plenty of products on the market designed to make carrying bags a breeze, so please remember to bring some along the next time you're out with your dog. And if you find stray poop, do your community a favor and give it a home in a plastic bag in the trash! |
Del Mar Fair We had a raffle for free training services donated by Lu Meyer's Obedience Academy and The Art Of Dog. Our winners were Nicola Cooper of Leucadia and Cheryl Goodheim of Carlsbad. We'd like to thank all the folks who volunteered their time at the fair: Dawn Redman, Lu Meyer, Tracy & Marc Love, Laurie Michaels, Patty Amshey, Terry Peña, Gina Anderson, and of especially Susan Willhoit who organized the whole affair. Check out the photos from this year's fair Annual Meeting Our annual meeting is around the corner. We're trying to finalize the date, so expect an email soon announcing the final arrangements. We're hoping to have a number of speakers doing short presentations, so it should be fun. And of course we'll be offering some great gift prizes too. Seaside Bazaar We have an opportunity to have a booth at the Encinitas Seaside Bazaar on weekends. We're looking for folks who can volunteer their time to help us staff the booth. Email Laurie Michaels for more information. You can help! Write to local newspapers and politicians. Attend municipal meetings when dog parks are being discussed. Help educate fellow park users on dog park etiquette.
