December 2001

Thank you to everyone who has expressed interest in the very important work in which PADZ is currently involved. We want to include you in the progress we are making and to let you know how you can help. Here is where things stand:

Members of the Board presented PADZ's case to the Encinitas City Council on October 24, 2001.

On Wednesday November 28, 2001 PADZ met with city staff members to discuss in detail the potential sites laid out in PADZ's October presentation. As one Board member stated "We had a good session... It WON'T be an uphill battle--the council already gave him & staff the go-ahead to prepare their recommendations/approx. costs..." The city staffers will probably present their report to the city council sometime in the beginning of the new year.

The sites that are to be considered for immediate planning (approximately one year):
McPhearson Park (Leucadia and Vulcan)
Hawk View (near Quail Canyon)
The SDGE Easement (Encinitas Blvd).

Other sites are being considered, including the Hall Property - but these will take longer as they are still in the development stages for the city.

PADZ supporters should plan to attend all relevant workshops and city council meetings to take part in the initial planning stages - this way, we get in on the ground floor. We will make every attempt to give you advanced notice of these meetings.

\We are making HUGE strides and many of you have asked how you can help. Here's what you can do:

PADZ will be invited back to the city council to present how the community can assist in defraying the costs involved in setting up and modifying these sites to make them enjoyable but most of all safe for all our four-legged friends. Please let us know what you can contribute to the cause, whether it be time, money or services.

This is really an important step for us as we want to show the city council that the community is involved in this project *with* the city in its development and maintenance. Here are some examples:

Donations in-kind or cash pledges for:
Landscaping - sod, trees, shrubs, large rocks, etc.
Signs - dog park etiquette signs, etc.
Fencing
Sprinkler systems
Water fountains
Benches and picnic tables
Trash cans and pooper-scooper stations

Donations of time:
Help modifying the space the city offers us (clearing brush, grading, installing fencing, planting trees and shrubs, etc)

Manning PADZ information tables and assisting with future fund raising events

Show community support by attending workshops and city council meetings whenever a dog park issue is on the agenda.

Spread the news! The best way to gain community support is for us to build up our membership database within the Encinitas Community. Direct all those you know to our web site or have them call us (760-436-3571- our President Lu Meyer) or email us at padz@adelphia.net for information.

We promise to keep you all informed on our progress and hope you all will join us in making dog parks not just a reality in Encinitas, but a long lasting success.

Thanks again for your support!
P.A.D.Z.
